Wimbledon Outfit Guide: How to Create a Flawless Look

Sometimes I like to dream up outfits for events I hope to attend someday – and the Wimbledon Tennis Championships at the All England Lawn Tennis Club is definitely on that list. I also have recently gotten quite a few DMs requesting outfit ideas for the event so I thought I would put together a post! Founded 148 years ago, Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world. It’s also widely considered the most prestigious. The event takes place in Wimbledon, London – about seven miles from the city center. This year, the tournament kicks off on June 30 and runs for 14 days, wrapping up on July 13.

From classic tennis looks and preppy styles to chic dresses and trendy ensembles, I love taking a peek at what everyone’s wearing each year. For me, the fashion is half the fun of this iconic event. So naturally, I couldn’t resist putting together some Wimbledon outfit ideas for anyone lucky enough to attend!

I chatted with a few friends who’ve gone over the years, and they shared some great tips on what to wear to Wimbledon. There’s a lot to consider – from the weather to the unofficial “dress code”—and today, I’ll be covering it all!

Things to Consider When Planning a Wimbledon Outfit

As I mentioned earlier, I haven’t been lucky enough to attend Wimbledon (yet—fingers crossed!). However, I’ve had several friends who have gone over the years, so I picked their brains about what to consider when planning a Wimbledon outfit. Here’s what they shared!

Wimbledon Outfit Dress Code

Is there a dress code for spectators at this event? Technically, no – there isn’t a formal dress code. In general, the event calls for “smart casual” attire. The only strict regulations are no ripped jeans, dirty trainers, sports shorts, running vests, or bags larger than 16″ x 12″ x 12″.

That said, Wimbledon is one of those storied sporting events where many attendees do dress up. It’s not uncommon to see men in full suits and ties and women in elegant midi dresses and heels. Personally, I’d rather be overdressed than underdressed – and I think one can show respect for the sport, its traditions, and the athletes by dressing accordingly.

Check the Weather

Temperatures at Wimbledon typically range from lows in the 50s to highs in the 70s. However, one year temps soared above 90, and another year they dipped to the low 40s. It can also be quite rainy that time of year – so long story short, be prepared with a weather-appropriate Wimbledon outfit!

I suggest planning to wear a third piece with all of your looks, just in case the temps drop. Also, spectators have limited shade, except in parts of Centre Court. So if you get a sunny day (yay!), be sure to pack SPF, sunglasses, and anything else you’ll need to stay comfortable in the heat.

Dress for Comfort

Public transportation, walking, and cycling are all highly encouraged for this event, as parking is extremely limited and many roads are closed. Even if you arrive by private car or taxi, drop-off points are only so close to the event grounds – so you can expect to do quite a bit of walking.

For this reason, I suggest keeping comfort top of mind when planning your Wimbledon outfit. Opt for comfortable shoes and clothing that’s easy to move around in – you’ll be glad you did!

Is All White Required For a Wimbledon Outfit?

While players are required to wear all white, spectators are not. Again, there aren’t any strict dress code rules enforced for attendees – aside from a few prohibited items, such as oversized bags and clothing with hate speech, inappropriate language, etc.

White, however, does tend to be a very popular color choice among guests. I always consider white to be such a great color for summer. It not only looks classic and chic, but it also helps keep you cool. So it’s no surprise that this hue is a staple at Wimbledon!

What to Wear to Wimbledon

Okay, now onto the fun part – what to wear to Wimbledon! I’m going to break down some of the outfits I’ve had swirling around in my head for this iconic event. There’s a little bit of everything here, from looks that are a bit more over-the-top to outfits that feel effortless and easy.

A Classic White Wimbledon Outfit

As I mentioned earlier, white is a popular color choice for Wimbledon. If I were to go for this classic hue, my first pick would be this stunning shirtdress paired with these chic sandals (which I own and love in another color). To keep things simple, I’d add my favorite oversized pearl studs and this wicker bag – I love that it fits well within the bag size requirement!

If the weather was looking cool, I’d also pack this linen striped blazer. Not only would it keep me warm, but it would also add a bit of interest to the look! Last but not least I would add this hat. Hats are allowed, but only if they do not disrupt the view of other attendees!

A Chic Set

Sets are always top of mind for me, and I recently came across this gingham seersucker vest and shorts set, which would make for a perfect Wimbledon outfit. While I love this exact set, I’d actually pair the vest with this gingham knit skirt and these chocolate brown sandals. I love the slight variation in the checks and materials, and I think the vest length would look wonderful with a more fitted, column-style skirt.

To complete the look, I’d go with this minimalist East-West top-handle bag. And if it happens to be a rainy day, I’d pop this gingham trench over my shoulders for a statement, editorial twist on head-to-toe gingham! For accessories I would wear these shades, this pair of earrings I own and love and this bracelet I wear almost everyday.

A Wimbledon Outfit With A Pop of Color

Of course, I had to share an example of a great Wimbledon outfit with a pop of color! When I saw this favorite midi dress reissued in green this year, I immediately started thinking of ways to style it – and it would be perfect for this event!

I’m a big fan of pairing sneakers with dresses, especially when you know you’ll be doing a lot of walking. This stunning dress would look amazing with these green and white sneakers. To add a little more white to the look, I’d finish it off with this vintage-style white rattan bag. I would also pack these classic sunglasses and this folding hand fan – no better way to beat the heat and look chic!

A Standout Stripe

This striped shirtdress looks like it was made for a day of tennis! The colors are stunning, and I love the detail within the pleats. While I wouldn’t wear full-blown heels at Wimbledon, I wouldn’t be afraid to wear a comfortable low-block heel. These orange block-heel city sandals pair perfectly with this dress and add a nice pop of color. To complete the look, I’d stick with the color story and add this crochet summer bag. I would balance out the brighter accessories with a few neutral styles such as these beautiful studs and this practical, yet fashionable visor!

Wimbledon Outfits Sure to Be an Ace

If you’re one of the lucky ladies who finds herself at Wimbledon someday, I hope these outfit ideas offer some style inspiration. It’s such a fun and iconic event, so take your time choosing the perfect look – and you’ll be so glad you did when you look back on photos for years to come!
