Ever ordered a fabulous-looking outfit from a European brand, only to unwrap it and wonder if it was made for a child’s mannequin? We’ve all been there. A recent letter from one of our readers reminded us just how tricky (and honestly, frustrating) the US plus size conversion game can be, especially when you’re trying to shop internationally without needing a PhD in fashion math.

Let’s face it: figuring out your size across borders can feel like trying to crack a secret code. Between different sizing systems, brand inconsistencies, and the eternal mystery of what a “true size” even is, it’s enough to make a curvy girl want to give up and stick to sweatpants. But don’t worry—we’re breaking down the basics of US plus size conversion so you can confidently fill your cart, whether you’re shopping in Paris, Berlin, or right from your couch.

US plus size conversion tips for shopping online with international plus size designers:

UK sizing: The sizes you see on a UK site are not the same as US sizing. Neither is Australian sizing! To help you out, always reference the size charts. BUT also see if they have US plus size conversions on their site.

For plus size clothing stores that don’t offer size conversions on their site, there are helpful resources available. Kathy’s Curvy Corner is a great reference, featuring size conversions across multiple countries—including metric sizing for lingerie.

Most international brands now have US versions of their website, so if you can, use those you can to give you some guidance along the way!  For example, Evans, ASOS Curve, City Chic, and Dorothy Perkins have US versions of their website, in which the sizing is converted into US sizing, to help you shop! Being that we’re located in the US, most links we give (especially in my plus size designer lists) are to the US version of the sites!

Know that each retailer and designer has their own aesthetic- some are cut more body conscious, and others more conservatively. For example, Dorothy Perkins does fit more on the smaller side, BUT if you look at the fabrication of the dress, depending on your shape, you have to see if it is worth a try- you may be surprised, which brings me to…

Return policies. When shopping from plus size clothing stores online, it’s important to choose retailers with generous return policies. ASOS is a standout in this area, and Dorothy Perkins also offers easy returns. However, one downside with Dorothy Perkins is the lack of expedited shipping options.

When shopping from plus-size clothing stores and unsure about sizing, even after checking U.S. plus-size conversion charts, a helpful tip is to purchase the item in two sizes if possible. Buying the size that seems right, along with one size up or down depending on the retailer’s fit, can save time and ensure a better fit.

Understanding UK to US sizing is key when shopping from international plus size clothing stores, especially to ensure the right fit the first time. With sizing variations between regions, using trusted conversion charts and resources can make the shopping experience smoother and more enjoyable. Whether you’re eyeing UK-based brands or navigating global retailers, taking a moment to double-check your size can save time, returns, and wardrobe frustration, helping you confidently shop the styles you love.
